My personal interest and goal is in producing artwork and picture books for children. I wanted to bring alive the story of The Parrot and the Merchant, by the thirteenth century poet Rumi, and visually represent its story and message to a young audience.
The central story theme is about the relationship between the merchant and the parrot. The parrot plays a trick on the merchant to escape to freedom, the lesson being that to love something means setting it free. I have expressed the colours, the atmosphere and details to fully deliver the depth of this story.
I created a version of my book in both Farsi and English languages. I experimented with a colour coding system to help with translation.
I like creating work using manual dexterity over digital creation. I believe when we touch an object to create art it allows us to explore all senses. I introduced clay into the project development, as it was used in everyday life of people in the time of the story.
The process of developing the artwork for my MA has led me into thinking about other ways of experiencing content. I am beginning to explore the idea of theatrical exposition with my artwork forming elements of movable background set pieces.
