My practice lies in book illustration and for my MA I produced a book intended for teaching young adults life skills through fantastical texts and imagery. I use digital methods to generate my illustrations. This major project helped me focus on developing different approaches to rendering images relative to the book content.
Running through the centre of my project is my young adult character Oki, who is on an adventure to become an adult. In this image Oki is going to a job interview. He will encounter an Ogre who is the interviewer.
It's a difficult interview and the Ogre is speaking in riddles. Oki wins over the Ogre by using techniques such as making eye contact, using positive body language and speaking clearly. When Oki passes the interview he gets the prize which in this case is gold, but in real life is the job.
This vignette introduces a sinister character to my second story which is about getting a mortgage. Oki’s house is destroyed and he visits an elder to find a solution. The elder tells Oki that a raven outside will give him the key to a house, if Oki can find the house it unlocks he can keep the house.
When Oki buys his house he is confronted by a long and hard-to-read contract. Oki cannot read all of the small print and enlists the help of my otter character Raymond, who is a solicitor, or solicotter.
