For my MA I developed a range of hand printed wallpapers, fabrics and note cards. I was inspired by the RSPB’s ‘red list’ which lists all of the 67 threatened species of birds in the UK. I have made repeatable patterns using 10 recognisable species on the list with the hope that confronting these images will encourage more environmental awareness.
I enjoy the process of lino printing and it gives all of the products a hand-printed and unique feel. Here I am inking up one of my specially made lino plates ready for printing. I also enjoyed mixing colours and trying variations.
'Blossom' features 5 birds (Nightingale, Ring Ouzel, Tree Sparrow, Skylark and Grey Wagtail) on the RSPB red list.
I printed each pattern in three separate colours across all of the wallpaper, cushions and note cards. The colours are chosen to fit in well with people's homes whilst offering a lot of options.
The note cards are printed in the same way as the wallpaper and cushions, making every card unique. The nature of lino printing means that the placement and pressure of ink varies meaning every card is different.
