I have focused on concept design for my MA major project. Unlike illustration, concept design is a pre-production process. Taking H.P Lovecraft’s novella ‘The Shadow Over Innsmouth’ as source material I worked to produce a series of visual concept guides for translation of the story into a realistic horror style video game.
The characters have to fit the description in the writing which includes historic background, personality and mood, social status and their relationship to the storyline,
I have always been interested in character design as well as monster design. The biggest mystery in the story is a fish-frog-like species called ‘the Deep Ones’.
I don't have an architectural background and lacked knowledge of drawing in perspective, so this was a challenge. I spent some time studying the technical rules which then helped me focus more on the visual look.
To make the designs useful the first thing to do was to go back to the context to get clear about the subject matter. Researching photographs helped me to ensure all the features in my architectural drawings fit their historic background.
